Based on many experiences of ILO and other organizations around the world, the effectiveness of WISE and related approaches in provoking voluntary and practical action to improve working conditions of unprotected workers has been demonstrated. The next challenges are to expand the content to include other key working conditions issues, such as maternity protection, working time and sexual harassment; to adapt the methodology to other groups of unprotected women and men at work, such as those in the informal economy; and to forge more effective links with local partners, such as local governments, community-based organizations and NGOs who can bring the benefits to a much larger number of workers and small businesses.
TRAVAIL has embarked on a learning and research agenda to meet those challenges. We welcome partners in this effort. We have conducted a literature review aimed at identifying what has been tried and what has worked in experiences around the world related to conditions in the informal economy and MSEs.
