Working conditions: Protection of workers' privacy: Conditions of Work Digests

Workers' privacy: Part I: Protection of personal data of the Conditions of Work Digest, introduces the privacy issues raised by new information technology, contains international instruments on the protection of personal data, provides an analysis of the legislation to protect citizens' privacy in 19 countries, includes collective agreements and enterprise-level policy statements and guidelines, and presents the positions of workers' organizations, employers' organizations and others on workers' privacy in data-processing systems.

Workers' privacy: Part II: Monitoring and surveillance in the workplace of the Conditions of Work Digest, discusses the extent to which workplace monitoring and surveillance are restricted or prohibited in industrialized countries, and describes approaches to protect the privacy of employees while recognizing the legitimate needs of employers. It provides a comparative analysis of legal approaches, a country-by-country presentation of the legal framework, and policies, guidelines and recommendations of governments and workers' and employers' organizations.

Workers' privacy: Part III: Testing in the workplace of the Conditions of Work Digest. Although employment testing is an accepted part of the selection and placement process, questions have arisen as to how far en employer should be allowed to probe into an employee's lifestyle, state of health and psychological make-up. This publication discusses the extent of such testing in industrialized countries and the restrictions placed on the use of various tests.
