Street and market vendors, the majority of whom are women, account for an important share of informal employment around the world. They commonly endure poor working and employment conditions, including long working hours, physically difficult and uncomfortable conditions, risk of fire and accidents, low and irregular incomes, lack of maternity protection, and risk of harassment and violence. They lack access to services and tools that would empower them to make improvements.
Linked to its efforts to upgrade and expand approaches to improve working conditions of unprotected workers. The ILO is undertaking a small pilot project in Indonesia. This project will develop a simple toolkit for addressing the priority needs of street and market vendors relating to working and employment conditions. This will be based on research on the needs and demand for improved conditions, based on consultations with key informants, current and potential providers of services, and the street and market vendors themselves, as well as technical assessments of their working conditions and environment.
