Simple and safe cost-effective solutions for moving and lifting heavy loads
Example 3: Making loading easier in Martin's storage area

In the storage area of Martin Enterprises, big rolls of fabric were lying on the floor of the storage room and were handled exclusively by manual operations. Handling these rolls weighing a ton each in increasingly limited space involved substantial risks, even to experienced workers, and the possibility of physical injury was a real threat. A helping device was the evident answer, but the purchase of a small crane or similar apparatus appeared economically unfeasible.

Eventually a low-cost, but effective, solution was found. In order to gain space and simplify the loading and unloading of the fabric rolls, a new device was realized. It consists of a metal bar to insert inside the roll, a steel rope, a hook in the ceiling and a very simple mechanism to lift the roll without major effort. Also a trolley was built using scrap material that facilitates unloading and transport of rolls. The cost of this device was US$ 250.00, an affordable expense and one that greatly reduces risks for the workers concerned.
