Evance Kalula and Dong-One Kim

On 11 September 2015, Prof Evance Kalula, handed over a miniature Zulu shield as a symbol of his Presidency to Prof Dong-One Kim from Korea. Prof. Dong-One Kim will be ILERA's President until the end of the 18th World Congress, that will take place in Seoul, Korea, from 23 to 27 July 2018.

Mia Ronnmar

Prof Mia Rönnmar was elected President-Elect of ILERA. She will take up her term as President after Prof Dong-One Kim and until 2021.  Prof Rönnmar is the Dean of the Faculty of Law of the Lund University in Sweden.

17th ILERA World Congress
Cape Town, South Africa, 7-11 September 2015

The Changing World of Work: Implications for Labour and Employment Relations and Social Protection

692 delegates from over 40 countries including 184 speakers attended the World Congress in Cape Town, last September. The congress was most successful thanks to Prof Evance Kalula, Mr Frikkie de Bruin and their great team.

Mr Greg Vines, Deputy Director-General for Management and Reform of the ILO spoke in the opening session of the Congress. In his speech he reiterated that the ILO most welcomes any opportunity for collaboration with ILERA.

Please note that all the papers presented during the congress have been published as well as many pictures taken during the whole week.

ILERA with the financial assistance of the ILO, sponsored several scholars and IR practitioners to attend the congress. Several have sent us a small report telling about their experiences during the congress, which can be found here.


The ILERA Council is composed of the representatives of ILERA Full Members, that can be either national associations or regional associations. Currently, ILERA has Full Members in 34 countries and 1 regional association in Central Africa (the Institut du Travail d'Afrique Central). Itac covers 11 French - and Portuguese speaking countries.

24 members were represented at the last Council Meeting that took place during the World Congress and the most important points on the agenda were the elections of the President-Elect and the new members of the Executive Committee. As mentioned above, the Council unanimously elected the future President of ILERA, Prof Mia Rönnmar from Sweden. Prof Rönnmar will preside ILERA from 2018 to 2021 and will be responsible for the organization of the World Congress in 2021.

The Council also elected members of the Executive Committee (EC). There are 16 EC members including the Officers of ILERA, who are the President, President-Elect, Past President and the Secretary- General. 11 members from the 4 regions complemented by a 16th member from the ILO. The EC is responsible for determining the programme of ILERA and to act as focal point for the regions.

Winner of the 2015 edtion

Chris F. Wright

We are very happy to announce that Chris F. Wright won the 2015 edition of the Luis Aparicio Prize. Chris is a University Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Sydney Business School in Australia. Chris’s research covers various issues relating to the intersection of employment, globalisation and public policy, with a particular interest in comparative employment relations, labour market regulation, immigration and supply chains. During the Gala Dinner, Chris received a plaque of recognition handed over to him by Prof Roger Blanpain, who was President of ILERA from 1986 to 1989 and an amount of 1000 USD for his future research.

The selection committee, chaired by Prof Anil Verma,  received thirteen very qualified nominations and, therefore, decided to award the second and third place as well.

Ariel AvgarAriel Avgar ended second in the competition. Ariel Associate Professor and Associate Dean at the School of Labor and Employment Relations at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research interests include organizational conflict management patterns and practices, alternative dispute resolution, conflict accuracy, and social networks and conflict in teams.

Keith TownsendThe third place was won by Keith Townsend. Keith Townsend completed his PhD in 2005 in the Department of Industrial Relations at Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia. He worked for more than two years at the Queensland University of Technology before returning to Griffith University where he is now employed as an associate professor.

Both Ariel and Keith received a plaque of recognition and all the nominees for the prize received a 2-year subscription to ILERA.

The 11th ILERA European Congress will be held in Milan, Italy, Thursday 8 September 2016 to Saturday 10 September 2016. The congress will be hosted in the Faculty of Political, Economic and Social Sciences in the city centre under the theme " The future of representation".

A warm welcome to the Labour Law Association (LLA) in Slovakia, who just recently joined the ILERA Council. The LLA strives to bring together professionals working in the field of labour law and related areas with the aim of enhancing the development of labour law and linking scholars with practitioners. LLA fulfils its objectives by means of organising seminars and conferences, providing advisory and research services, publishing and supporting its members in their professional activities.

Preliminary meetings have also been held with scholars in Georgia, the Russian Federation and Poland to explore the possibilities for the establishment of national associations there.
