Tripartite Meeting on Youth Employment: The Way Forward

Geneva, 13-15 October 2004

The ILO organized a Tripartite Meeting on Youth Employment: The Way Forward from 13 to 15 October 2004. A report prepared by the Office entitled Starting Right:Decent Work for Young People (FR, ES) was used as a basis for the discussions. The purpose of the Meeting was to: highlight the political, economic and social significance of youth employment issues in developing and developed countries; place youth employment in the context of the Decent Work Agenda, the Global Employment Agenda and the recommendations of the High-Level Panel of the Youth Employment Network; and review national policy frameworks and specific policies and programmes conducive to the creation of quality jobs for young women and men. It was also to distil country-level experiences, lessons learned and good practices, in particular as regards the role of tripartism in promoting youth employment, and to provide guidance for the formulation of national action plans on youth employment.

The Meeting was attended by 93 participants, among whom were 22 delegates and advisors from 15 governments, 14 employers’ representatives and 14 workers’ representatives. In addition, 39 delegates and advisors from 31 governments attended as observers, as did 4 representatives from international non-governmental organizations.

Participants exchanged views and experiences on the subject matter of the Meeting and unanimously adopted a set of conclusions. (FR, ES) The meeting also adopted a report on its discussions, which has been published in the Note on the Proceedings (FR, ES)
