The ILO and follow-up to the World Summit for Social Development (World Social Summit - WSS)

Geneva, 2-4 November 1999.

The World Social Summit in 1995 took up the main themes of the International Labour Organization's message on social and employment policy stressing the primacy of the full employment goal. The ILO has been grateful for this reinforcement of its own conviction, which helped in the acceptance of the Organization's 1998 Declaration of fundamental principles and rights at work. The ILO is therefore anxious to preserve the momentum of the WSS and ensure the success of Copenhagen plus 5 (the special session of the General Assembly as follow-up to the WSS) and, within its areas of competence, to help others to do the same. Above all the ILO will stress the role its constituent governments should play, hand in hand with workers' and employers' organizations, in meeting their Copenhagen commitments.

Currently the ILO is seeking the guidance of its government, worker and employer members at an international consultation to be held in Geneva from 2-4 November. This will be a meeting of 60 participants, plus other agencies and NGOs, whose purpose is (i) to contribute to an exchange of national experience especially in following up on commitment 3 on employment of the WSS; (ii) to take stock of what the ILO has done to assist its constituents meet their obligations; and (iii) to assess, in the light of prevailing international economic developments and their social consequences, whether the thrust of ILO activities and policy advice in the employment policy field both nationally and internationally in conjunction with other agencies, is both correct and adequate. The meeting will also be instrumental in preparing the ILO's input to Copenhagen plus 5.

The report to be presented to that meeting "The International Labour Organization and the promotion of full, productive and freely chosen employment" is currently available.
