Labour Market Indicators Library Network (LMIL) Database System
|
The whole idea of the LMIL Network is to benefit from the ILO field structure by
enhancing the capabilities of its subregional offices to serve as labour market data warehouses. The LMIL
Network is supported by a database system for electronically transferring information from the field to
headquarters, and vice versa, in a manner that complies with
ILO Methodological
Standards. Indicators are compiled, together with meta-information, which is required to assess the
accuracy of indicators and to analyse their comparability across economies and time. The LMIL system allows
all the Network partners to share information resources and to gain access to information stored in the LMIL database
for analysis and dissemination purposes.
The LMIL database, which is shared among ILO offices, is regularly updated with the information tapped in
international repositories including the ILO Bureau of Statistics database (LABORSTA). It therefore provides
an overview of the availability of labour market indicators, allowing Network members to fill in gaps where
information exists and to identify additional gaps in national labour market information, thus devising a
strategy to strengthen any weak points.
The ILO field offices retain responsibility for identifying, soliciting and reviewing the information in order
to fill gaps in the series contained in the LMIL dataset and to provide the latest information available from
regional or national sources. In some regions, regional databases have been developed using the LMIL database
system. Those database contain variables that are of interest to the ILO field offices and the regions where
they operate.
The LMIL Network has already brought tangible results in terms of expanded coverage of the participating regions
in the Key Indicators of the Labour Market (KILM), and should continue to serve to increase both the availability
and timeliness of national indicators at the global and regional levels.
