September 2000

The ILO's Director-General, Juan Somavia, has joined the UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan and the World Bank President, James Wolfensohn, in convening a high-level policy network on youth employment. The network will draw on the most creative leaders in private industry, economic policy and civil society (including youth leaders) to explore imaginative approaches to the youth employment challenge. The policy network will present recommendations on possible sources of solutions including the contribution that information technology and the informal sector, especially small enterprises, can make to employment generation.

For more information on the youth employment policy network and its objectives, see: http://www.un.org/esa/socdev/youthemployment/concept_paper.pdf

November 2000

During the G8 Labour Ministers Conference in Turin (Italy), ILO Director-General Somavia cited younger and older workers as two groups for whom social inclusion is especially crucial and noted that the concept of "Decent Work" can form a basis for comprehensive policies to underpin globalization.
