Second World Assembly on Ageing

In resolution 54/262 (pdf file), the General Assembly decided to convene the Second World Assembly on Ageing in 2002, on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the first World Assembly on Ageing which was held in Vienna in 1982. The Government of Spain will host the Second World Assembly on Ageing in Madrid, from 8 to 12 April 2002. The Assembly will be devoted to the overall review of the outcome of the first World Assembly, and to the adoption of a revised plan of action including a long-term strategy on ageing, in the context of a society for all ages, the theme of the 1999 International Year of Older Persons.

The ILO is fully involved in the preparations of the Second World Assembly on Ageing and is working in close cooperation with the United Nations Programme on Ageing

Preparations for the Second World Assembly on Ageing

  • Preparatory Committee Meeting.
    The General Assembly decided at its 54th session that the Commission for Social Development shall serve as the preparatory committee for the Second World Assembly on Ageing and, as such, shall be open to the participation of all Member States of the United Nations, members of the specialized agencies and observers, in accordance with the established practice of the General Assembly. The first Preparatory Committee meeting took place between 26 February and 2 March, 2001. The ILO attended the meeting and delivered a speech during the opening..

  • Interagency Meeting for the Second World Assembly on Ageing.
    The overall goal of the Meeting was to coordinate the activities of the United Nations System organizations related to the Second World Assembly, including its preparation and follow up. The meeting took place in New York between 6 and 7 March 2001. The ILO participated in the meeting and prepared a background paper (rtf document) on ILO’s issues and activities related to ageing.

  • Technical Committee Meetings
    The role of the Technical Committee is to provide advice to the UN Secretariat on technical issues related to the preparatory process, in particular regarding the content of the revised Plan of Action and the long-term strategy. The ILO participated as an observer in the third meeting of the Technical Committee that was held in Viena, Austria between 23-26 April, 2001. The first Technical Committee meeting took place in Frankfurt in June 2000 and the second Technical Committee meeting was held in the Dominican Republic in October 2000.
