This Regional Brief Series, comprising seven briefs, gives a detailed picture of the interaction between gender, poverty and employment in the context of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries, namely Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe It was prepared during the years 2001-2003 as a supplement to the English version of the Gender, Poverty and Employment package (2000), and is addressed primarily to readers, facilitators and trainers.
This Series explains the political, economic, legal, social and cultural factors underlying gender discrimination, and presents the most recent data and experiences specific to the region. It highlights the degree to which the countries' development and growth depend on international sustained action and gender-sensitive policies, where women play a major role. Analysis of specific case studies illustrates particular issues and approaches discussed.
