General Population and Housing Census - Mexico

The General Population and Housing Census is carried out every ten years, at the beginning of every decade. Its main purpose is to collect demographic and socioeconomic statistics on the country´s total population, and on the building materials used and services available in households.

Among other indicators, the General Population and Housing Census provides the following basic data on the characteristics of Mexico´s population:

• Age
• Sex
• Schooling
• Literacy
• Religion
• Marital status
• Indian-language speakers
• Immigration status
• Fertility
• Place of residence
• Occupation and
• Income

Information on housing includes the following:

• Type of tenancy
• Building materials
• Available services
• Number of rooms
• Inhabitants
• Number of households and
• Geographical location

The most recent census of this kind, the XII, was taken in 2000.
