Industrialisation in Mauritius has brought along a considerable rise in the level of gainful employment for women.
In line with the overall strategy for the economic empowerment of women the Ministry of Women, Family Welfare and Child Development has set up the Women Entrepreneurship unit. This unit is committed to increase participation of women in the industry and other productive sector of the economy. It helps women to set up small enterprises and provides an integrated package of support ranging from training to production.
Women who are planning to set up micro, small or medium enterprise can get adequate training on different courses and benefit from an up to date information on different sectors to expand or modernise their units.
Women with skills but without capital to set up their own business can take advantage of the various Entrepreneurship Financial Schemes such as the venture capital fund or the micro-credit scheme based on the Grameen Bank programme. The Microcredit Scheme is targeted towards the poorer segments of the society, particularly women, for microenterprise development.
