The overall purpose of the Italian Household Longitudinal Study is to
understand the main effects of social changes with regards to the
economic-occupational structure, the labour market, the system of welfare, the
educational institutions and the families, up to the first years of the next
century (the last wave of the survey will be carried out in 2005), through the
analysis of individual and family life-histories. Thus the Survey pursues two
main aims:
The first is essentially descriptive in nature and consists in the
gathering of information concerning the current situation of a broad
representative sample of Italian families (circa 5,000): composition,
sources and levels of income, social and demographic features of their
members.
The second aim of the Survey directly concerns study of social change and
consists in the gathering of retrospective information on each adult member
(i.e. born before 1st January 1979) of each family studied. More
specifically, the intention is to reconstruct the 'life-history' of each
member of each family - from the moment of birth to the moment of the
interview - in relation to the following topics: movements (geographical or
residential mobility), education and vocational training (school and
training career), work (work career), social origins, and family (marriages
or cohabitations and birth or adoption of children).
In addition to the 'Family Form' and the six thematic sections (Geographical
mobility, Education and vocational trainingWork, family, family resources,
Health, religion and voting behaviour), there are two special sections: 'Use of
banking services', which is to be administered only to interviewees resident in
the province of Trento; and 'Welfare and Social Security Benefits', which is to
be administered only to interviewees resident in the region of Trentino-Alto
Adige.
