National Disability Authority (NDA) - Ireland
Source: Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform
On 12 June 2000, a coordinating, advisory and monitoring body, the National Disability Authority (NDA), was established under the aegis of the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform.
The NDA will monitor, review and evaluate on a regular basis all legislation, policies, programmes, services and standards for people with disabilities in order to assess their effectiveness. This also involves the establishment and monitoring of codes of good practice. In addition, NDA will also promote and assist in the development of statistical information required for planning, delivery and monitoring. The guiding principle in the establishment of the new body is that there should be no overlap or duplication of functions.
The NDA comprises a chairperson and 20 ordinary members (including one elected employee representative). The term of office of a member of the Authority is not more than four years. The term of the current Authority expires in June 2004.
The National Disability Authority has set up three advisory committees to assit in the work of the NDA:
Mental Health Advisory Committee
Research Advisory Committee
Standards Advisory Committee
Members of these advisory councils represent disability organisations, government agencies and institutions working with disabilities.
