Mobilisation of Human and Other Resources of the African Diaspora in Belgium for the Development of the Countries of Origin (MIDA) - Belgium

Source: International Organization of Migrations

This project is a capacity building programme, aiming at transferring knowledge, expertise and other resources from the Great Lakes' Diaspora in Belgium to Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda. Many of the skilled nationals residing in Belgium have acquired experience and material and financial resources that they wish to use towards the development of their country of origin. These people are interested in returning to their countries, but are unable to find employment prior to returning, or cannot afford the costs of their travel, or are simply afraid of losing all privileges gained in the host countries. This project offers a solution to all these problems matching the wish of these people with the interest of their countries of origin to benefit of the diasporas' expertise to enhance their local development.

IOM will conduct an assessment of the expertise, knowledge and investment needs in the countries of origin and concurrently of the qualified nationals residing in Belgium. On the basis of these assessments IOM will proceed to correlate the needs and resources assessed with the transfer of experts or qualified nationals and other resources to the countries of origin. The State Secretariat for Cooperation and Development and the General Direction of the International Cooperation of Belgium are the IOM partners in Belgium.

This project operates within the framework set by the program Migration for Development in Africa (MIDA).
