The
ASIST Regional Programme in Asia
ASIST-Asia Pacific gives Advisory Support, Information Services
and Training to upgrade rural and urban infrastructure in the region.
With the ultimate aim of promoting employment creation and poverty
reduction through the wider use of state of the art labour based
methods, ASIST-Asia Pacific works closely with Government programmers,
Technical Universities, Financial Institutions, and Donor Programmes.
It is closely linked to its sister project ASIST-Africa which plays
an major role in the dissemination of information.
ASIST-Asia Pacific fosters decent work and poverty reduction by
"adding value" to existing public investment programmes through
the promotion of :
-
labour-based appropriate technology as the technology of first
choice for those infrastructure and construction works for which
it is economically and technically feasible
-
decentralization and improved rural accessibility through
the adoption of a participatory integrated rural accessibility
planning approach
-
contracting parties to focus on employment and small enterprises
through the adoption of targeted procurement as legislative
means
-
the emergence and growth of small contractors through the
creation of an enabling environment and specialised training
programmes.
