The ASIST Regional Programme in Africa
An ILO-executed regional programme Advisory Support, Information
Services and Training (ASIST) was established in 1990 to support
labour-based infrastructure development initiatives in Eastern and
Southern Africa. This programme now offers services to projects
and programmes in over 15 sub-Saharan countries in complementary
areas like local level planning tools, road construction and maintenance,
rural and urban infrastructure, irrigation, soil and water management,
drainage, sanitation and waste management.
ASIST Africa is now based in Harare and Nairobi. The programme
reports directly to the African Regional Office in Abidjan and to
the Employment-Intensive Investment Branch EMP/INVEST in Geneva,
and collaborates closely with the ILO's Multi-Disciplinary Advisory
Teams (MDTs) in East and Southern Africa. ASIST provides advisory
support, information services and training to projects, consultants,
policy makers, donors, training institutions, universities and others
involved in the promotion and application of labour-based technology.
The programme is a link between country level activities, sub-regional
backstopping and the EIIP Branch at ILO Headquarters.
In 1998, a similar programme for the Asian and Pacific region was
launched. Establishment of two other (sub) regional support programmes
has been initiated in West Africa ("ACTIF") as well as in Latin
America.
