The ILO MNE Declaration was adopted by the ILO in 1977. At its 209th Session (March 1979), the Governing Body established an adhoc committee concerned with follow-up to the MNE Declaration. This became a standing committee in November 1980. In 1993, the Governing Body established the Subcommittee on Multinational Enterprises within the framework of the Committee on Legal Issues and International Labour Standards. The mandate of the Subcommittee is as follows:
- to conduct periodic surveys on the effect given to the MNE Declaration;
- to consider requests for the interpretation of the provisions of the MNE Declaration;
In addition, the Office is asked to report to the MNE Subcommittee on:
- Promotional activities and technical advisory services
- A programme of research on multinational enterprises and social policy
- Developments in other international organizations.
