DFYWA promotes the sustainability of the livelihoods of the marine fishing communities in Andhra Pradesh. These coastal fishing communities are especially vulnerable to natural disasters, for this reason DFYWA believes that microinsurance could be an important risk management tool. In response to community demand, DFYWA will be developing a customized insurance product based on the results of a needs assessment. Being new to the microinsurance market, DFYWA obtained technical assistance with the support of a Facility grant to develop a microinsurance strategy and to conduct market research. |

ABIHO is an NGO in Cameroon with a mission to improve the poor's access to quality health care. It began running a mutual health organisation scheme five years ago. Today, this scheme covers some 300 families and continues to expand. ABIHO obtained technical assistance to assess its existing community health insurance scheme and identify a strategy to attain sustainability. |

Palmyrah Workers Development Society (PWDS), a Tamil Nadu based development organisation, supports community initiatives through activities such as community organisation, awareness raising, capacity building, building mainstream linkages and influencing policy. It has some five years of experience in operating micro health insurance schemes. PWDS is currently developing a project to provide insurance to the rural poor through a consortium. It has obtained technical assistance to select the members of this consortium and develop the partnership structure. |

NACCF is an umbrella organization of small agricultural microfinance cooperatives that are fully owned and managed by the local communities. Its major activities include providing training, technical support, monitoring & evaluations of members, auditing of members and successful programme replication. NACCF has been providing a livestock scheme to its members since 1986. It received technical assistance to assess the feasibility of developing a microinsurance programme for its members. |

Britak, a composite insurance company, is the third largest insurance company operating in Kenya. In partnership with the Kenya Tea Development Authority, it introduced a microinsurance product in 2007. Less than a year later the product was in great demand with more than 50,000 lives covered. However Britak were keen to further improve the product, and achieve greater financial efficiency. Britak obtained technical assistance to help them identify potential improvements to the product and related operations. The technical assistance included a study tour to exchange experience with another insurer piloting a similar delivery channel. |

Organization for Landless (RADOL) |

RADOL is an NGO striving to improve the socio-economic conditions of the landless and asset-less rural poor of Bangladesh. Since 1989, it has implemented several projects ranging from low-cost housing programmes for the landless to vocational training of the rural poor in crop cultivation on retreating river banks. In 2007, RADOL began discussions with several local NGOs and commercial insurance partners, about the formation of a consortium to deliver needs-based insurance products to the poor. RADOL has received technical assistance to refine its partnership structure for the pilot phase of this microinsurance project and to validate the products on offer. Mr. Syed H. Loton, the Secretary General of RADOL, aims to develop an effective partnership structure, offering in demand products, before including additional NGO partners. |

| Summary: |
Select Africa Limited is a part of the African Alliance Group. Its mission is to become an all encompassing retail financial services institution serving the unbanked and entry level sectors of certain African countries. It currently operates in 7 countries across Africa and considers Swaziland, where Select was founded in 1999, to be its new product incubator centre. Although credit and investment are its main products, Select also provides credit life and funeral insurances. Prompted by demand from its customers, Select now wants to provide additional insurance products. Select received technical assistance to design a market research questionnaire and to interpret the results of the study. Select will be designing products to be tested in Swaziland, with the aim of expanding these product offerings into the other countries in which they operate in the near future. |
