Mary Yang, the Facility’s technical expertise officer attended the ICMIF Development Workshop held in Zeist (Netherlands) on the 19-21 August 2008. Established in 1922, the International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation (ICMIF) aims at providing information and services to, and representing the interests of, the global cooperative and mutual insurance sector.
The event - Mary says - was an effective forum for exchanging ideas, experiences and for introducing microinsurance to those mutuals and cooperatives which are not yet offering this financial service. Workshop speakers presented successful examples of insurance products designed specifically for the poor and discussed the challenges and solutions to enhance consumers’ education. They also discussed the success of community managed mutual insurance organizations, the evolution of the microinsurance partner-agent model and issues related to regulating microinsurance.
Amongst key actors from the microinsurance sector, Mary met with the Micro Insurance Association Netherlands (MIAN), a network of 180 volunteers mostly from the insurance sector, but also bankers, ICT specialists and other professionals. MIAN, with particular experience in India, Nepal and Uganda, is in the process of becoming one of the Facility’s designated TA providers.
