Government Programmes in the United States - Department of Veterans Affairs

 Affirmative Action Program

The Department’s affirmative action programme is a good example of the programmes that have been established by most Federal Government agencies.

Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilisation

Departmental Procurement

The Office has a programme for female small business owners wishing to contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Activities consist of panel discussions, one-on-one counselling sessions at trade and governmental small business shows and presentations at small business conferences etc. The Department has designated a Woman’s Business Advocate to liaise directly with the women-owned business community. The advocate’s job is to encourage the procurement office within each of the Department’s acquisition offices to consider using women-owned firms wherever possible.

Center for Women Veterans

Access to Benefits

The Center ensures that women veterans have equal access to benefits, that services encounter no discrimination in their attempt to access these services and that health care and benefits programs are responsive to the gender-specific needs of women veterans. The Center also acts as the primary advisor to the Secretary for Veterans Affairs on all matters related to programs, issues, and initiatives for, and affecting, women veterans.
