Equal Employment Opportunities for Women and Men

Government Programs in Mexico - Secretariat of Social Development

The Secretariat administers a number of programmes relevant to women and employment:

Programme for Women

This programme promotes services and social projects for marginalised women who live in rural and urban areas. During the period 1995 -1999, most of the projects have been directed towards the improvement of community facilities, family nutrition and the creation of employment opportunities.

Agricultural Day-Labourers Programme

The programme is directed towards the agricultural migrant labourer population and towards, in particular, its female component. Through this programme the Secretariat is financing, inter alia, projects for:

  1. housing, sanitation, health and social security;
  2. teaching of justice, education and training of migrant communities in their places of origin;
  3. promoting employment opportunities through, for example, the installation of different workshops; and,
  4. promoting investigation, awareness raising and co-operation among different public and private and social agencies and institutions.
Education, Health and Food Programme (PROGRESA)

The educational part of the programme is directed at promoting access to education for all, especially in those states where the drop out rates are higher. The problem of girls education has been addressed, inter alia, through the assignment of scholarships to families in need.
