Singapore Council of Women's Organisations (SCWO)

The SCWO was incorporated on 21 March 1980. It is the national co-ordinating body of women's organisations in Singapore, and the non-governmental representative on the ASEAN Committee on Women (ACW). Its members include labour organisations with branch focusing on women’s issues. Its objectives include:

a. Co-ordination and exchange of ideas among women's associations, organisations, and clubs and to bring together all women leaders of Singapore
b. Promotion and improvement of the status of women in general, and particularly in education, economics, social welfare and community involvement, culture and sports
c. Gathering and dissemination of news, information and other material concerning women and the family, as well as carrying out studies, research and training programmes for the benefit of women
d. To simulate and encourage women to realise and fulfil their social responsibilities.

SCWO is a member of the ASEAN Confederation of Women’s Organisations
http://www.aseansec.org/home.htm which is a women’s regional grouping comprising the respective recognised national women’s councils of ASEAN member countries. The SCWO implemented a Plan of Action ASEAN Women, Vision and Action for the 21st Century, with the objective of advancing the status of women in ASEAN countries, which calls for more progress for women in seven areas, including information and technology, sustainable development, industrial economy, poverty alleviation, politics, social impact assessment and government and non-government partnerships.
