The Lebanese constitution does not discriminate against women in its articles, and it does not include specific clauses on equality between men and women.
However provisions relevant to gender equality may be summarised as follows:
- Paragraph b. of the Preamble states that Lebanon is a founding and active member of the League of Arab States and the United Nations Organization, and accordingly, it respects and thus, observes all conventions and agreements it made with partner countries in these organizations namely, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in its decision making processes and practices.
- Other provisions of the Preamble emphasize respect for social justice and equality of rights and duties among all citizens without discrimination.
- Article 7 states that all Lebanese people are equal before the law, they enjoy civil and political rights, and are bound by public obligations and duties.
- Article 12 states that each Lebanese person has the right to hold pubic office, and that access to such positions is always made on the basis on merit and competence. Eligibility to such positions is determined by the law, and therefore only persons who show that they meet the requirements through their achievements, are entitled to occupy them.
- Article 15 protects rights of ownership. No property may be expropriated, except for reasons of public utility in cases established by law, and after payment of fair compensation also established in the law.
