The Constitution of the Arab Republic of Egypt 1971

The Constitution of the Arab Republic of Egypt 1971 contains the following articles relevant to equality, women and employment issues.

Article 4 provides that the State shall work to prevent exploitation and lessen income disparity.

Under article 8, the State is obligated to ensure equality of opportunity for all citizens.

Protection of mothers and children, by the State, is granted under article 10.

Article 11 grants that women are equal to men in the political, social, cultural and economic spheres "without detriment to the rules of Islamic law" (Shari’a). It also obliges the State to help women harmonize family and work responsibilities.

Article 13 provides for "fair remuneration" for work.

Article 17 ensures health insurance and the right to a pension in the event of unemployment or incapacity.

Article 23 stipulates that the national economy shall be organized in order to: ensure an increase in, and equitable distribution of, the national income; improve living standards; eliminate unemployment, and increase employment opportunities at a guaranteed minimum wage.

Article 40 grants that all citizens are equal before the law, and have equal public rights and obligations, without discrimination due to sex, ethnic origin, language, religion or creed.

Article 151 states that international human rights treaties ratified by the State have the equal legal force as Egyptian national law.
