Croatian Parliament - Croatia

The Croatian Parliament is a body of the elected representatives of the people and is vested with the legislative power in the republic of Croatia, as provided under article 70 of the Constitution. Before recent constitutional amendments, the Croatian Parliament consisted of the House of Representatives and the House of Counties.

The Croatian Parliament, the Sabor, recently became a unicameral body after its Upper House (Chamber of Counties) was eliminated by constitutional amendment in March 2001.

Under the Constitution of the Republic of Croatia, article 80, the House of Representatives has the following powers:

  1. decide on the enactment and amendment of the Constitution;
  2. pass laws;
  3. adopt the state budget;
  4. decide on war and peace;
  5. decide on alterations of the borders of the Republic;
  6. call referenda;
  7. carry out elections, appointments and relief of office, in conformity with the Constitution and law;
  8. supervise the work of the Government of the Republic of Croatia and other holders of public powers responsible to the Parliament, in conformity with the Constitution and law;
  9. grant amnesty for penal offences;
  10. conduct other affairs as specified by the Constitution.
