Fair Wages and Hours of Labour Act - Canada

Fair Wages and Hours of Labour Act of 1985

This Act sets out conditions on wages and hours of work in every contract made with the government of Canada for construction, remodelling, repair or demolition. Notably, all persons involved are entitled to be paid fair wages and any hours of work in excess of eight hours a day or forty hours a week must be paid for at an overtime rate (s. 3). "Fair wages" means such wages as are generally accepted as current for competent workers in the district in which the work is being performed for the character or class of work in which those workers are respectively engaged (s. 2). Finally, we can note that the Governor in Council, on the recommendation of the Minister, may provide by regulation, inter alia, for the method of determining what are fair wages, for the fair employment practices and for the classifications of employment or work (s. 6).
