Equal Employment Opportunities for Women and Men

Equal Employment Opportunity (Commonwealth Authorities) Act - Australia

Equal Employment Opportunity (Commonwealth Authorities) Act, 1987

Second Copy of the Act

This Act requires certain incorporated and unincorporated Commonwealth government bodies to develop and implement an equal employment opportunity program. The program must be designed to ensure that appropriate action is taken to eliminate discrimination by the body and to promote equal opportunity for women and persons in designated groups in relation to employment matters. Under s.6, this program must include consultation measures with both unions and employees and provide for the collection and recording of relevant statistics and related information. In addition, the program must seek to identify any discriminatory policies or practices and any patterns (whether ascertained statistically or otherwise) of lack of equality of opportunity. The program must establish particular objectives and quantitative and other performance indicators for its implementation to be monitored and evaluated. Under s.11, the relevant Government Minister may make recommendations to the body regarding the action to be taken to improve the effectiveness of its program. Under s. 9 and s.10, there is provision for annual and special reports by the body on the implementation of its program.
