National Guidelines in the United Kingdom - Part-time Work

Department for Trade and Industry

In addition to providing guidance to employers and employees on complying with the new Part-Time Workers (Prevention of Less Favourable Treatment) Regulations, 2000, the Department of Trade and Industry Guide also offers suggestions for best practice in this area. The Guide on Compliance and Best Practice for Employers and Part-Time Workers recommends that:

  • In order to give part-time workers better access to job opportunities, employers should review their recruitment policies to include part-time work wherever possible. It also suggests that employers could give consideration when advertising posts as to whether part-time work arrangements could fulfil the requirements of the post.
  • A wider range of jobs be made available to part-time workers in order that they be given more mobility and opportunities in career development:
"At all levels of the organisation including skilled and managerial positions, employers should seek to maximise the range of posts designated as suitable for part-time working or job-sharing".
  • Employers seriously consider job-sharing arrangements and recommends that larger organisations keep a record of those interested in engaging in job-sharing arrangements.
  • Employers allow part-timers to change their working hours, a practice for which there is currently no legal provision.
  • Training be scheduled so as to make it accessible to part-time workers as far as is possible.
