Action Plan for Poverty Alleviation

An Action Plan for Poverty Alleviation, focusing on a multi-dimensional integrated approach, has been formulated with the collective participation of various stakeholders, like the private sector, Ministries and NGOs. The objective of the Plan was, basically, to develop a framework for the implementation of poverty alleviation programmes. This Action Plan lays emphasis on empowerment of the poor to be involved in productive activities through better access to education and credit facilities. Some of the activities of the Plan are highlighted below:

  1. provision of training facilities;
  2. provision of additional low-cost housing schemes for the very poor citizens and homeless;
  3. streamlining of social aid programmes to ensure efficient use of government resources;
  4. Provision of free meals in some very poor deprived areas
  5. setting up of a Co-ordinating Committee; and
  6. expansion of Micro-Credit Schemes.
