National Guidelines in Mauritius - Gender

National Gender Action Plan

The main focus of the Gender Bureau has been the preparation of a policy document. The National Gender Action Plan (NGAP) which defines a vision for gender equality up to the year 2004. The plan evaluates the priority concerns of Mauritius, as set out in the Beijing Platform of Action of 1995, and also identifies new priority areas. The plan has been prepared through a series of participatory consultations held by the Ministry at various levels. The long-term objective of the plan is the attainment of greater equality and equity between men and women while preserving family welfare.

Five priority areas were then identified which are as follows:

  1. Human Rights
  2. Gender Equality
  3. Economic Empowerment
  4. Human Resource Development
  5. Health
