Equality of Opportunity in Education and Training - Norway, Gender Equality Projects

Education for All - National Action Plan for Norway was drafted in 2003, in accordance with the World Education Forum Declaration, in Dakar in 2000. The Plan describes initiatives implemented to promote gender equality in education:

"Conscious Choices of Education"

To combat occupational gender-segregation, the project aimed at encouraging girls and boys to make untraditional choices of education and profession.

”Operation Minerva: Girls and Mathematics”

In Norway, girls more rarely choose technology or science and mathematics -based subjects. The Operation Minerva is aimed at girls at 32 primary/lower secondary and upper secondary schools in Norway with a goal to encourage girls to choose mathematics and science subjects.

Teacher recruitment campaign

The report ”Let men be men” (2001) proposed national as well as local initiatives and strategies for recruiting men to teacher training and schools. In 2002, a campaign was carried out to recruit people to different types of teacher training. One of the target groups of the campaign was young men.

Internet based network for men in schools

The project was financed by the Ministry of Education and it aimed at establishing an Internet based network for men in schools and men in teacher training.

Gender and ICT

Several local and national development initiatives are being carried out to increase interest in and use of computer technology among girls at school.
