Equality of Opportunity in Education and Training - Education and Training Programmes under the Ministry of Education - Nepal

The Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT)

The Council is responsible for the overall development of technical education in the country. It is responsible for operating 10 public sector technical schools, two vocational training programs and one Technical Teachers Training Institute. The Council's programs and activities for 1999-2004 include gender sensitivity in curriculum development and the development of special training programs to meet the needs of women and other underprivileged groups.

Program for Non-Formal Education Centres

The Non-Formal Education Program under the Basic and Primary Education Project (BPEP) funded by the World Bank has a large-scale women's literacy program. The main program of these centres for the year 2001 contained activities such as:

  1. Six month adult literacy classes for 185920 illiterate adults of 75 districts.
  2. Six-month 1st women education program for 41350 illiterate women between 15-45 years of 60 district in 1600 classes.
  3. Six-month 2nd women education program for 42400 illiterate adult women in 60 districts in 1600 classes.
  4. 80 people from Non formal population and family life education program will receive trainers training and assistant development worker training for 2000 people.
  5. Family literacy survey is to be carried out in 10 district and steps are taken in several districts to eradicate illiteracy within next three years and five years.

Another program of the Ministry of Education is Chelibeti, which is directed to school-age girls who are not in school. It aims to prepare them for school entrance at appropriate levels, and is particularly popular among the rural population.
