Equal Employment Opportunities for Women and Men

Equality of Opportunity in Education and Training - Government Programmes - Mauritius

Various programmes for school leavers who have not found admission in any of the existing educational institutions have been put in place by the Ministry of Women's Rights, Child Development and Family welfare. These courses are run in Women's Centres, Social Welfare Centres, Community Centres, Village Halls and Municipal Halls over the whole island. Courses include Computer Literacy, Home Economics, Dressmaking, Adult Literacy and Crafts.
An Adult Literacy Programme was launched in 1986 by the National Women's Council following a survey of the needs of women, which showed that the inability to read and write was a disabling factor for women. Learners in the age group 13-82 are benefiting from this course and are acquiring basic skills in writing, reading and numeracy.

The introduction of a Computer Literacy programme by the National Women's was in response to the country's need to prepare its citizens to participate fully in the economic development that is taking place. Additional opportunities had to be provided to women especially those with modest academic achievements to help them enter the employment market.
