Equality of Opportunity in Education and Training - Education and Vocational Training Acts - Tunisia

Act. No. 91-65 of 29 July 1991 on the General Principles Act Concerning the Education System

The Act introduced measures to combat sex discrimination inherent in the education system. In particular, article 1(3) stipulates that one of the goals of the education system is to "prepare pupils for a life in which there is no place for any form of discrimination or segregation on the basis of, inter alia, sex".

Article 7 introduces compulsory education, the main aim of which is to halt school drop-outs and strengthen the right of young girls to education. Any parent who fails to enrol his or her child, or who withdraws him or her from school before the age of 16, is liable to pay a fine in accordance with Article 5(32).

The General Vocational Training and Employment Policy Act

With regards vocational, training and employment guidance and information, the Act states the need to target adults "of both sexes", bearing in mind the specific needs of women in that area and the need to promote equal opportunities between men and women.
