Equality of Opportunity in Education and Training - National Agency for Education and the Equal Opportunities Ombudsman - Sweden

1. National Agency for Education under the Ministry of Education

The agency has developed a strategy for promoting and evaluating equality at schools and to integrate equality issues into the Agencies' evaluation and development work.

2. Equal Opportunities Ombudsman

The Equal Opportunities Ombudsman (JämO) is a Government authority established in 1980 when the Equal Opportunities Act (1991:433) came into force.

Information and education activities of the Ombudsman include informing the public on equality in the workplace and equality in the area of education. In 1998 a project was conducted in two compulsory schools to promote equality and prevent sexual harassment at school. This included education courses for teachers and students on gender equality and gender-based harassment and the preparation of an action plan against sexual harassment. As a result of this project, the Ombudsman produced a hand book on preventing sexual harassment at school.
