Equality of Opportunity in Education and Training - Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Technology - Japan

The Ministry administers a number of programs relevant to women and education. Within the Ministry, there is the Gender Equality Learning Division which develops measures and programs for promoting women's education and home education, as well as supporting and promoting volunteer activities.

National Women's Education Centre

The National Women's Education Centre is an institution for social education affiliated to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Tech which promotes women's education. NWEC is the only national institution for women’s education and it organises various programs to promote practical training related to women; domestic and international exchanges; collection/provision of information; and, specialised research on women’s education. Some examples of activities are:

  1. Gender equality education seminars for teachers.
  2. Publication of the "Handbook on Women's Studies Education and Learning: Toward a Gender-Free Society" and other handbooks on education methods for women's studies.
  3. Surveys and research on the women's studies, women in development and home education.
  4. The "Forum on Women's and Gender Studies", since 1996 to provide an opportunity to present achievements of organisations, groups, or individuals active in research and education of women’s studies at local levels and promotes exchanges of views and networking among such organisations, groups and individuals.
  5. International Lifelong Study Forum dealing with lifelong study from the view point of gender.
  6. Publication of the National Women's Education Centre Bulletin.
  7. Establishment of the Women's Information Network System-Databases. 
  8. Provision of accommodation and conference facilities for women-related studies.
