The afternoon will be chaired by Mr. Göran Hultin, Executive Director of the ILO's Employment Sector, who will briefly position the Global Agenda within ILO's overall work and introduce Messrs. P. Lipponen, Mr. A. Larsson and C. Hodson.

14.10 - 14.25: Special message by Mr. Paavo Lipponen, Prime Minister, Finland

14.25 -14.40: Mr Allan Larsson, former Minister of Finance, Sweden, former Director-General of DG V, European Commission, has been working closely with the ILO Employment Sector in the development of the Global Agenda for Employment.

He will briefly present the main features of the Agenda.

Two inter-linked, subsequent roundtables (90 minutes each) will be moderated by Mr. Charles Hodson of CNN. Each brief introductory statement to be made in response to specific questions.

Format: Participants will need to choose between three parallel sessions, each of 2 hours and 15 minutes duration. In each session, introductory remarks will be made in response to specific questions based on each participant's expertise and unique perspective, to be followed by Q and A from the floor.

09.00 - 11.15: Parallel Working Sessions I:

Session I A: Technology: Building digital bridges

An assessment of how ICT can be harnessed to create employment and support development. How can ICT be promoted in ways which enhance growth and employment creation, while narrowing the widening gaps among segments of the worlds population?

Format: 10 minute presentation on employment record of country, analysis of the record and identification of key lessons learned. To be followed by Q&A.

Session II A: Global governance and international policy coordination

What is the role of government in promoting employment in an increasingly globalized world economy? This session will consider the design and use of appropriate fiscal and monetary policies to stimulate employment creation and equity; provision of social protection, especially unemployment insurance; active labour market policies; and international coordination of macro-economic policies.
