AGRICULTURE

  • Mkombozi Biharamulo Savings and Credit Cooperative Society – Support to Peasantry enterprises development in Biharamulo
Mkombozi Biharamulo Savings and Credit Cooperative Society faces various challenges: difficulties by peasants to visualize their undertakings as commercially viable projects, absence of linkages between peasants and four markets due poor information communication facilities hence resulting into low income on the part of producers, low productive capacities on the part of peasants due to use of rudimentary technologies i.e. hand hoeing and shifting cultivation with much destabilization of ecosystem. The aim of the project is therefore to transform the majority of our SACCOS members who are peasants so that they become Micro-entrepreneurs along their lines of undertakings. Through participatory training for transformation to be offered, peasant will be organized in small informal learning groups through which they will analyse their potentials, problems and needs, prioritize them and develop viable business plans. They will be enabled to analyse their markets and strategize their action plans

OTHER

  • Centre for Informal Sector Promotion - Capacity Building of Informal Associations/Groups through Formation of Cooperatives (pdf file 2.5MB)
During the last ten years, the Centre for Informal Sector Promotion (CISP) has been assessing Informal Economy Workers (IEWs). On a national level, the research established that IEW’s, excluding farmers or formal economy wage based workers, lack access to loans and credit from formal financial institutions, with the effect of denying them access to education and training and, subsequently, graduation and formalization. The cooperative movement does offer access to information, training, education, loans and credit through SACCOs. A new effective approach must be found to help the IEW’s access these services and eventually enter formalization. This project aims to provide members of informal economy worker groups with sensitization workshops on the creation of cooperatives and their operations. The project will provide training, advice, facilitation, and technical assistance in the process of formation and managing of cooperative societies, to support ten leaders of two informal economy associations towards self-reliance and sustainability in Moshi and Arusha. The establishment of SACCOS will enable members to effectively access affordable financial services. Furthermore, the promotion of good governance will give informal economy workers a stronger sense of ownership and facilitate acceptance by the government, development agencies and other stakeholders.

Entrepreneurship skill training and access to credit facilities will be provided to ensure that the informal economy workers will be able to undertake income-generating activities and alleviate income poverty. This is expected to be achieved by strengthening the ability of national and local trade unions and cooperative organizations, to work together constructively in the informal economy.
