The objective of the Challenge Fund support for innovative cooperative ventures- also called challenge fund for innovation - is thus to promote new forms of cooperatives that have proven successful, or new ideas and approaches that the programme believes should be tested in the region. These may or may not be borrowed from other regions and may include, among other things:
- Shared service cooperatives/ small business cooperatives formed by entrepreneurs and small companies to generate economies of scale and greater bargaining power;
- Cooperatives formed by informal economy workers;
- Social service cooperatives (e.g. cooperative schools, cooperative clinics or dispensaries, home-based care cooperatives);
- Security cooperatives;
- Funeral and burial cooperatives;
- Different forms of housing cooperatives, in particular those involved in low-cost housing and/or slum upgrading.
