The ILO and Cooperatives
The International Labour Organization (ILO) has been active in cooperative development for the last 86 years, providing member states with assistance in cooperative policy, legislation, training, business development and networking. It is the only UN-organization with a dedicated focus on cooperative development, and the only organization that has developed an international standard in this field (i.e. ILO Recommendation 193).
“Cooperatives empower people by enabling even the poorest
segments of the population to participate in economic progress; they
create job opportunities for those who have skills but little or no
capital; and they provide protection by organizing mutual help in
communities”
Juan Somavía, ILO Director-General, June 2002 |
