Trade Union Organizations
Where workers are organized there are, as a rule, fewer violations
of rights, improved working condition and better prospects for
future development. Through collective bargaining and participation
in social dialogue institutions, trade unions strive to protect and
promote the interests and rights of the workers they represent,
and, with their access to large numbers of workers have an
essential role to play in social mobilization efforts at the
national, regional and international levels.
The ILO maintains a close relationship with trade union
organizations. In the International Labour Conference, workers’
interests are promoted through the participation of workers’
delegates from all member countries, and through the Workers’ Group
of the Governing Body (14 titular members and 19 deputy members).
Four international trade union bodies have permanent consultative
status in the ILO and take an active part in its activities. They
are the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions
(ICFTU), the World Confederation of Labour (WCL), the
World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) and the Organization
of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU).
In the ILO, the Bureau for Workers Activities (ACTRAV) is the unit
established specifically to act as a link between the ILO and trade
union organizations, including the major international trade union
confederations, major international industry-based trade union
federations, and national trade union organizations. The role of
the Bureau for Workers’ Activities more specifically includes:
-
assisting the workers’ group at the Annual Conference of the
ILO, the Governing Body, regional and sectoral conferences, and
in the Office's various activities;
-
infusing a trade union perspective into the work of other
departments and divisions of the Office;
-
raising awareness of union initiatives and activities in other
departments and sectors in the ILO;
-
assisting in project implementation and technical cooperation in
the field;
-
organizing meetings and seminars on subjects of interest and
topicality to workers;
-
following up on and analyzing trends in national, regional,
industry-based and international trade union movements; and
-
using its resources and expertise to help strengthen and develop
workers' organizations.
