Workshop to promote ratification of the Private Employment Agencies Convention, 1997 (No. 181)Geneva, 20-21 October 2009In accordance with a decision taken by the Governing Body of the International Labour Office (301st Session, March 2008), the Workshop to promote ratification of the Private Employment Agencies Convention, 1997 (No. 181) will be held at the ILO, Geneva, from 20 to 21 October 2009. At 9.00 a.m. on Tuesday, 20 October 2009 Government, Employer and Worker participants will meet in their respective groups. The Workshop opens at 9.30. Purpose of the WorkshopThe purpose of the Workshop is to promote ratification of the Convention by ILO member States in general, and especially in major sending and receiving countries of migrant workers and countries where the private employment agency market is developing. The attendance of governments that have already ratified the Fee-Charging Employment Agencies Convention (Revised), 1949 (No. 96), and the Tripartite Consultation (International Labour Standards) Convention, 1976 (No. 144), or that have requested technical assistance on Convention No. 181 is particularly welcome. The Workshop may adopt recommendations that would be the basis of subsequent action by the ILO and its constituents. ” ParticipationThe Workshop brings together participants from all interested governments, as well as eight Employer representatives and eight Worker representatives appointed by the Governing Body on the basis of nominations submitted by the Director-General after consultations with the secretariats of the Employers’ and Workers’ groups, respectively. In addition, participants from intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations and other interested parties may attend. An issues paper on the topic Private employment agencies, temporary agency workers and their contribution to the labour market, published in English, French and Spanish, will be discussed at the meeting. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided in appropriate languages, in accordance with the participation at the Workshop.
