Think Tank Meeting
on the Impact
of the 11 September Events for Civil Aviation
29-30 October
2001
The attacks
in the United States on 11 September had direct and dire consequences for the
civil aviation industry and the workers in that industry. Because of the strong
fall in passenger demand, airlines were forced to reduce capacity. This, in turn,
made staff reductions unavoidable. In the weeks immediately following the attacks,
the airlines announced 200,000 job reductions. More are likely to follow, also
in related industries.
In response to the
crisis in civil aviation, the ILO organized an informal Think Tank Meeting on the Impact
of the 11 September Events for Civil Aviation.
The Meeting, which
was held in Geneva from 29-30 October 2001, brought together a
small group of independent and industry experts, two employer and two
worker experts as well as a limited number of advisers and observers.
The main purpose of the Meeting was to discuss ways and means for
the Office to respond to the crisis and for the preparation of the Tripartite
Meeting on Civil Aviation: Social and Safety Consequences of the Crisis
Subsequent to the 11 September Events, to be held in Geneva from 21 -
25 January 2002.
A briefing
paper (pdf, 97k) was prepared for the Meeting. Subsequent to the Meeting,
the Office prepared a fact
sheet on the impact of the 11 September events
on the Air Transport sector.
