Recent developments
Three Decent Work pilot projects for Africa, Caribbean and Southeast Europe
In following up the ILO action programme begun in 2004 and developing new activities the Hotels, catering and tourism (HCT) sector work is focusing on 3 pilot activities in the context of the Decent Work Country Programmes in Barbados, Croatia and Egypt. Tripartite meetings and consultations have taken place to develop a project on “More and better jobs” which aims to improve the competitiveness and quality of the tourism sector by supporting vocational training programmes and developing and/or improving institutionalized, sustainable social dialogue structures at national and company level.
ILO-UNWTO agreement on cooperation
To increase the capacity of the Hotels, catering and tourism sector for employment, development and the elimination of poverty, the ILO and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) expect to reach an agreement in October on cooperation in order to strengthen the capacities and activities of the two UN agencies.
As a first outcome of this cooperation ILO and UNWTO are in the process of finalizing and publishing in «Sources and Methods» a publication "Labour Statistics on Employment in the Tourism Industries" by October 2007.
