Occupational safety & healthWork-related injuries have steadily declined in the MEE industries, but there are potential hazards from the continuous use of visual display units and exposure of workers to radiation and solvents. In line with the deliberations of an ILO Meeting of Experts on Safety and Health of Workers in the Electronics Industry in 1994, the ILO continues to monitor, analyse and disseminate information on potential hazards and measures to prevent them. The ILO Code of Practice on Safety and Health in the Construction of Fixed Offshore Installations in the Petroleum Industry is of special significance for the MEE industry, and its application has been emphasized by resolutions Nos. 100 and 111 of the Metal Trades Committee. Particularly in the middle- and low-income countries, there is a need to (a) ensure adequate training for sound work practices and prevention of occupational hazards, and (b) promote compliance with occupational safety and health standards and codes of practice through incentives at sectoral and enterprise level, as well as improvements in inspection capacity. |
