ILO Activities

The Tripartite Meeting on Lifelong Learning in the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Industries was held in Geneva from 23 to 27 September 2002.

The above issues raise opportunities and challenges for ILO advisory services and related research and technical cooperation in the field, as many governments and their social partners need to formulate, evaluate, and redefine both general and sectoral policies on trade, investment, employment, and human resource development.

Another promising area for ILO work in the field -- especially in Latin America and Asia -- is in the promotion of and participation in sectoral fora for bipartite and tripartite consultations on productivity-wage bargaining, training and related issues.

mechanical and electrical engineering pictureA Tripartite Meeting on the Impact of Flexible Labour Market Arrangements in the Machinery, Electrical and Electronic Industries was held at the International Labour Office in Geneva from 26-30 October 1998. A background report for the discussion was prepared entitled: Tripartite Meeting on the Impact of Flexible Labour Market Arrangements in the Machinery, Electrical and Electronic Industries (Geneva, ILO, 1998), as well as a Note on the proceedings (Geneva, ILO, 1999). In addition, a statistical background paper by M. Dessing and O. Mutter: The machinery, electrical and electronic industries in numbers (For discussion regarding the establishment of a database) is available upon request. As part of the follow-up to the meeting a Joint ILO-Ministry of Labour and Employment Seminar on: "Effects and Lessons of Internal Flexibility on Employment, Productivity and Working Conditions in the Auto Industry" (Efeitos da Flexibilização Interna Sobre o Emprego, Productividade e Condições de Trabalho no Setor Automotivo) was held from 7-8 October 1999, in Sao Paolo, Brazil.
