Social protection:
Occupational safety and health
The ILO has provided financial assistance for the International Federation of Actors (FIA) booklet entitled Act Safe: Minimum Recommended Health and Safety Guidelines for Performers Working in Live Shows, (pdf, 1.68MB) published in October 2007.
The ILO also assisted the International News Safety Institute to finance a two-day safety training workshop (pdf, 1.7MB) for twenty-five Somali journalists from various news media organizations and freelancers (31 July-1 August 2007, Hargeisa, Somalia).
Improvements brought about by information technologies in safety and health have been substantial, especially in the printing industry, but there are also new problems, such as “technostress” (see Violence and stress at work in the performing arts and journalism), computer-related hazards and risks, and factors related to telework (see Section 3.3 of the ILO’s 2004 Report, Chapter 5 of the Background Document for the 2000 Symposium, and Chapter 2 (New technologies and Safety and Health) of the 2000 Final Report.
