International Programme for the Promotion of Decent Work in the Maritime Industry

The objective of this Programme is to enhance social and economic conditions in the maritime industry as a whole and particularly for seafarers as part of ILO’s objective aimed at "promoting opportunities for men and women to obtain decent and productive work, in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity". This objective is articulated in the concept of Decent Work, which has received unanimous support of ILO’s tripartite constituents. The Director general of the ILO has officially launched the Programme during the opening ceremony of the 29th session of the Joint maritime Commission, which took place in January 2001.
